How to Replace an audi replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Hyundai.jpgCharles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is audi key fob not working in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly when they're an Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your replacement audi a3 key, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a typical part that is found across the audi a5 key fob 80 100 200, audi car key replacement UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
